Welcome to the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia
Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.
The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.
If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `
! denotes the Type Species of the genus
* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon
I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

This genus comprised of 4 species at this moment was segregated from Chondrorhyncha and groups the species with a callus plate that has a central keel or keels and apical teeth as well as setose sea-urchin-like appendages on the underside of the column near the stigma. Both Echinorhyncha and Euryblema have similar flower shape, callus and lip but differ in the clinandrium being on the ventral surfacewhile the clinandrum of Euryblema is on the apical portion of the colum and the stigma is a different shape.

There is but a single member in this epiphytic genus superficially similar to what was Kingidium but differs from all the Aeridinae by having an extremely thick spur wall, a broad plate like column ffot that protrudes downward across the spur aperture and partly blocks it, 4 pollina in 2 pairs and each pollina in the pair are highly unequal in size and are so closely adnate that it is difficult to separatae them. The pollina are situated on the top of the column apex and are not in a concavity on the front surface and the linear stipe is supported by a long rostellum extension that completely bisects the opening to the stigmatic cavity. The anther cap also has a corresponding long-linear extension at the base and has a lip with simple calli that have been reduced to low or indistinct ridges.

Elleanthus Presl. 1827 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Sobralieae, SUBTRIBE Sobraliinae.
There are 118 species spread thoughout the tropical Americas but they are concentrated around the Andes and are terrestrial or epiphytic herbs with matted fleshy roots that are similar to Sobralia in culture. The genus is characterized by having simple or branched stems with linear tolanceolate, plicate, veined leaves. They have a terminal inflorescence with a clusteed or loose raceme, with floral bracts that generally are larger than the flowers which are small and tubular witha lip that is larger than the sepals with a concave base carryiong one to two calli that enfold the column carrying 8 pollina. This genus needs to be kept moist at all times as they have no pseudobulbs and live in moist to very wet forests as both epiphytes and terrestrials.

The flowers have lateral sepasl that unites with the long column foot to create a spur that is open at the apex and extends backwards parallel to the ovary. The stigma has two lobes and it has a prominent rostellum. There are 2 member in this large epiphytic genus that is found in Northern South America and was originally in the genus Stanhopea. It differs in having 4-angled, gray green pseudobulbs with a single gray green leaf single flowered inflorescence with the dorsal sepal and petals are not united to the column, the lateral sepals connected solely to the base, the lip is divided into a hypochile, epipchile and mesochile with the mesochile wings "T" shaped, the claw of the lip without a callus and two hard pollina connected to an elongate stipe attached to a round viscidium. This genus should be grown warm to cool and should be kept moist at all times of the year. It also needs to be grown in a basket to accomodate the pendant inflorescence.

They have apical inflorescence that have flowers smaller than 4 centimeters in diameter. The column has no foot and is not attached to the lip for most of its length, and there are 4 hard pollina attached to the caudicles. These plants are best mounted on branches or tree fern plaques and as a whole do best in intermediate conditions. Encyclia is part of the Cattleya alliance and is often used in Cattleya alliance breeding.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the side lobes of the lip surrounding the column
