I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

There are 50 species mostly found in New Guinea but 2 are also found in Australia and Indonesia that need shade, humidity and plenty of water while growing and less when mature, but never allow to dry out completly, and you will be rewarded with more than one annual bloom.

There are 80 terrestrials in this predominately Australian genus of small to medium sized terrestrials herbs arising from subterranean tubers carrying a solitary, oblong or linear-lanceolate, basal leaf with a papery sheath blooming on a lax panicle or racemose inflorescence with 1 to 8 flowers with fringed or dentate margins from Malaysia to New Caledonia, Australia and New Zealand. Pot in the spring in a well draining terrestrial, sandy mix, give full sunlight, well ventilated, airy, cool to cold conditionswater lightly until new growth arises and then water copiously until with out wetting the foliage or inflorescence. Fertilize every 2 weeks until leafing and flowering have stopped and then give a dry cold winter.

This terrestrial genus with 100, medium to large sized species are found throughout the tropics of the world but are concentrated in Asia. There are two sub-genus to this genus, the first, Eucalanthe, has elongate to angulate psuedobulbs covered with a grey-green membranous sheath, plicate deciduous leaves and a laxly racemose hairy inflorescence with large bracts, while the second, Preptanthe has small to nonexistant psuedobulbs, broad swelling, long lived leaves and a densly racemose inflorescence with small bracts. The first section has plicate deciduous leaves that fall after the plant has matured, at this time it is best to reduce water and fertilizer for a decided rest. Resume water and fertilizer as the new growth appears in the spring. The second section has more even year round requirements and the leaves do not fall after the growth has matured. An interesting footnote, the two sections do not interbreed so there may actually be two genera here, but the genus has not been revised since Seidenfadden in 1975.

There are 113 species spread from Mexico to Argentina and the West Indies of this deciduous, fleshy psuedobulb with eight to twelve leaves. The inflorescence starts at the base of the psuedobulbs and may be erect or pendulous with male or female flowers. Female flowers are acheived by giving a mature plant high direct light, males will be produced by shading them some. The male flowers are characterized with the ability to eject their pollina up to eight feet from the plant. A good photo of the differences between the two sex's flowers can be seen here. PLEASE NO PLANTS UNDER THE AGE OF 21! as these photos are sexually explicit. The female flower can be seen with the male pollina in it's stigmatic cavity[see#1 in photo]. The male flower in the upper right of the picture shows that it has ejected it's pollina [see#2 in photo], first in that it is missing it's pollinarium and second by the limp colorless look of the flower in general as compared to the flower below [see #3 in photo]
The next photo that can be seen here, shows a dried female flower [See #2 in photo] 1 day after a successful encounter with a male pollina, next to a non impregnated flower [see#3 in photo]. Note the swollen ovary [#1 in the photo] which is actually the stem of the flower. Here is where the seed will develop and in 3-4 months the seed will be mature and the capsule will dry and break open spilling the seed to the wind.

A genus comprised of 53 species interspersed throughout tropical South America, prized for their large showy flowers, coveted for their gene pool, they and their generic alliance, ie. Brassavola, Laelia etc, represent the majority of orchids raised in this century. They are by and large intermediate growers and are best raised in pot culture although by no means mandatory, as in my hot environment they are best mounted on driftwood. They are recognized by their cylindrical psuedobulbs, apical thick leaves and a sheathed racemose inflorescence, giving rise to majestic large showy flowers. They are found at the top of the tallest trees in old wet forests at lower elevations. As such they require ample air circulation and regular fertilizing and watering with a short rest after blooming. Taxomony according to Carl Withner.
