HOME Orchid Species Glossary

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Abdominea J.J. Sm.1914 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.

This is a monotypic, lithophytic or epiphytic genus that consists of small plants with very short stems and a few elliptic leaves that blooms on an unbranched, elongate, many flowered inflorescence with many, well-spaced, small flowers with petals broader than sepals, the 3 lobed lip with small triangular side lobes and the acute, erect mid-lobe with a transverse basal callus all fused at the base to the column and spurred. The Anther has a beak and the rostellum is larger, longer and wider than the column and basally co-joined by a narrow base. There are 4 very unequal, pollina united in two pairs on narrow apically wider stipes and having a large disc.

Acianthus R. Brown 1810 SUBFAMILY Orchidoideae, TRIBE Diurideae, SUBTRIBE Acianthinae,

A dwarf terrestrial genus of 20 species that forms colonies and has tuberous roots, globose tubers, a solitary, ovate leaf and bearing a scapose, racemose, loosely spiraling inflorescence with few to several flowers which are found in Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. These plants have a 2 month summer dormancy, so water copiously as the new growths appear in the fall and less water after flowering and as the leaves die back in the spring curtail until newe growth begins to arise. Best grown in an acidy, gritty, loam based medium and given cold temperatures and full sun

Common Name or Meaning refers to the pointed sepals

Acostaea Schlechter 1923 SUBFAMILY Epidendrodeae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Pleurothallidinae.

According to Luer. This genus has 8 species that are all found from Costa Rica to Colombia and Ecuador, occuring at higher elevations as dwarf caespitose epiphytes with narrowly elliptic leaves without pseudobulbs arising on short ramicals with an annulus giving rise to a spathe through which an inflorescence arises bearing a loose raceme with with several opening in succession, with a single flower at a time and each surpasses the leaves in length. The flower has two pollina and has a sensitive lip which when movement from a pollinator is detected, snaps shut trapping the intruder who then pollinates the flower and is released in the morning.

Acriopsis Blume 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Acriopsidinae.

Six species round out this Nepal to Solomon Islands native genus, that are small epiphytic herbs, superficially resembling Cymbidium in habit but should be grown like the small tropical Bulbophyllum. The genus has a creeping, branching rhizome with crowded, ovoid pseudobulbs enveloped basally by slender, silvery non leaf-bearing sheaths and carrying 1 to 4, petiolate leaves and blooms on a basal, racemose to paniculate, many flowered, terete inflorescence with persistent floral bracts and carry small, twisted, non-resupinate, widely open flowers which consist of lanceolate, concave sepals apically fused to form a synsepalalum. The petals are spreading, oblong to obovate, the lip is 3 lobed, pandurate t oentire, 2 keeled disc and a straight to "S" shaped column with 2 long, parellel, porrect to decurved, stellida and a beak-like, bifurcate rostellum with 4, connate in 2 pairs pollina.

Common Name or Meaning referes to the mimicry of the column with a locust

Ada Lindl. 1854 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillarieae SUBTRIBE Oncidinae.

There are 17 epiphytic and occasionally lithophytic [on steep embankments] species in this genus found from Nicaragua south to Venezuela, Colombia to Peru and Bolivia that has many simalarities to Brassia but differs in having numerous distichous leaves and inflorescences per psuedobulb as well as a reflexed lip bearing a bilamellate basal callus often terminating in 2 tooth like mounds and subsimilar petals and sepals. Ada also has large and inflated floral bracts that also help distinguish this genus from Brassia and Oncidium. The plants of this genus are found between the elevations of 650 to 2700 meters but the majority occur at the more moderate elevations of 1800 to 2200 meters as warm to cool growing plants.

Aeranthes Lindley 1824 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Angraecinae.

There are 30 species on the islands of Madagascar, Comoros, and Mascarene and two from the mainland of Africa. The plant itself is an epiphyte and has a short stem, or may not have one at all, with distichous leaves, a pendant inflorescence with one or more small to large flowers that are somewhat transparent, green, yellow, and seldom white. They prefer shady, humid, well watered conditions and even fertilizer year round. The inflorescences which can take months to form should not be removed until it is obvious that they are dead as they can rebloom off the same spike. The plants should be grown in baskets with an epiphytic mix to accommodate the long pendant inflorescence that can reach 4' or longer.

Common Name or Meaning referes to the epiphytic growth habit

Aglossorhyncha Schltr. ? SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Glomerinae

There are 6 small to medium, mostly epiphytic to terrestrial herbs; stems slender to c. 35 cm long, usually branched; differing from Glossorhyncha Ridl. by the upper leaf sheaths not being ciliated, differing in the absence of a spur or sack like projection at the base of the lip and the presence of a slender and perfectly bare column. The leaves are usually spread out, distichously arranged, linear or ligulate with either an acute or to near apiculate apex; in the species A. serrulata the leaves are finely serrated, cabbage-like. The leaves in other species are more rigid. The inflorescences are apical with green to sulphur yellow glabrous flowers. The flowers are relatively small and borne singely or in pairs; the sepals are cucullate - amplectens with the laterals sometimes conglutinate; labella are more or less cucullate and concave. Six epiphytic orchids, with one exeption, of the Papua and New Guinea mist-forests where they grow on thick branches of very tall primary trees and only in those places surrounded by thick moss.

Agrostophyllum Blume 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Podochileae, SUBTRIBE Agrostophyllinae

There are fifty epiphytic or lithophytic species in this little cultivated genus that is found from the Seychelles to Samoa with the largest concentration of intermediate to warm growing species in New Guinea. They typically favor conditions suitable for Dendrobium. The genus is characterized by having clustered, erect to pendant, bilaterally flattened, leafy stems with numerous internodes carrying distichous, narrow, thin, black to brown, imbricating sheaths and bloom on terminal, usually globose or paniculate carrying many small, resupinate flowers with similar, free sepals and petals with the laterals formig a mentum holding the saccate base of the entire to 3 lobed lip with a short to long, column with a rudimentary foot and 8 pollina attached to a solitary viscidium.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the grass-like leaves
