HOME Orchid Species Glossary

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Pachyphyllum Kunth 1816 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillareae, SUBTRIBE Maxillariinae.

This genus has 41 species and is found from Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia as epiphytes or terresstrials on embankments in wet forests or paramo at elevaions of 2000 to 3700 meters and are best grown on plaques in cool conditions. The genus is characterized by having leafy monopodial stems with distichous leaves that are imbricated at the base and have short inflorescnec that arise from the axils of the upper leaves and have several white to yellow green flowers with the sepals united or free to form a basal tube, a free lip, a thick column and 2 hard pollina with short caudicles attached to a stipe and united to a viscidium. There are 3 sections to this genus with the first being the section Pachyphyllum which has the sepalas and petals free. The second is Section Orchidotypus Christensen 2008 which has the sepals and petals fused together at the base to form a tube for half their length. The third is section Capitulum that has the flowers arranged in a dense capitulum.

Paphiopedilum Pfitz. 1886 SUBFAMILY Cypripedioideae.

This genus of about 100 species occurs in SE Asia and the Pacific Islands out to the Solomon Islands, lacks psuedobulbs, has fan shaped growths giving rise to a stiff and sometimes hairy inflorescence which can have 1 or many flowers opening either together or in stages. The genus has two distinct growing types evidenced in their leaves, those that are mottled or solid with more than one flower grow warmer, and the solid green with only one flower grow intermediate to cool. The flower parts of Paphiopedilum are distinctly different than others with it's pouch like lip {#3 in photo} hanging below the shield shaped "staminode" {#4 in photo} in the center of the flowers and on to the bizarre hairs, warts and bumps of the linear petals {#2 in the photo}, and up to the cowl-like upper or dorsal sepal {#1 in the photo}. They are also related to our terrestrial Cypripediums of North America, commonly known as lady's slippers. They are best grown in pots with a wood media, need moderate shade, good humidity and regular year round watering with good air circulation.

Common Name or Meaning Venus Slipper - Paphia another name for Aphrodite - refers to the beauty of the flower

There may be 8 species in this terrestrial genus occurring in SE Asia north to Japan with erect stems carrying linear to ovate, cauline or basal rosulate leaves and bloom on an erect, few flowered inflorescence. The members of this genus are often included in Habenaria and sometimes Plantanthea but differ from both by the characteristic sessile, 2-lobed, stigma.

Common Name The Comb-Like Lip Orchid [referes to the form of the lip's lateral lobes]

Pedilochilus Schltr.1905 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Dendrobieae, SUBTRIBE Bulbophyllinae.

The genus of fifteen species from New Guinea and neighbouring islands. The genus is closely related to Bulbophyllum. Small terrestrial or epiphytic herbs vegetatively resemble those in the genus Bulbophyllum. Single leaves arise from the bulbous pseudobulbs and the inflorescence which carries a single flower arises from the base of the pseudo-bulb. Plants in flower are easily recognised by their pouched lip, superficially similar to the lip of Paphiopedilum species. Found in the montane mist forests growing on moss at altitudes above 1800 m and most at 2500 to 3000.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the shoe shape of the lip

`Peristeranthus T.E. Hunt 1954 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.

This is a monotypic, epiphytic genus from Australia. It was separted from Ornithochilus because of it's sessile lip, the abscence of a mid lobe of the lip, the lack of a flap over the spur-orifice, the prescence of a column foot and it's four pollina in two groups of two each. It's culture is similar to Vandas and has long pendulous, multifloriferous inflorescence.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the dove-shaped flower

This SE Asain genus is mostly terrestrial but occasionally an epiphyte is found all with small, cylindric to ellipsoid tubers giving rise t oan erect, stem with leafless basal sheaths and a few to several thin, linear to broadly elliptic, leaves with the uppermost almost bract-like. This genus blooms on a terminal , racemose, laxly to densely few to many flowered inflorescence carrying small, resupinate flowers with the dorsal sepal and the broad petals forming a hood over the short column and the lip is simple to 3 lobed, ecallose to callose, connate at the base with the edges of the column and has a short, pouch-shaped to cylindric spur. There are 2, sessile, convex, cushion-like to flat to clavate stigmas with 2 remotearms adnate to the base of the lip and the staminodia, carry 2, shortly clavate, sectile pollina have very short caudicles attached to the short rostellar lateral lobulesand there are 2 ovate to oblong viscidia and a small 3 lobed rostellum.

Pescatorea Rchb.f. 1869 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillarieae, SUBTRIBE Zygopetalinae.

There are 12 bulbless epiphytes with fan shape leaves in this genus ranging from Costa Rica to Ecuador and Colombia at elevations of 500 to 1200 meters in extremely wet cloud forests at the base of trees as epiphytes with their roots in abundant moss in deep shade. This genus is best grown cool and wet with moderate shade and even conditions year round. The genus is characterized by having no pseudobulbs, but the leaves are arranged in a fan shape and is indistinguishable from plants in Bollea a close relative. The differences are that the callus is more slender, and arched and they have a pair of basal lobes laterally embracing the long, slender, terete column. The genus is subdivided by two groups, one has a downy apex of the lip such as Pescatoria coronaria and the other has a smooth lip such as Pescatoria dayana
