Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.
The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.
If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `
! denotes the Type Species of the genus
* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon
I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Habenaria Willd. 1805SUBFAMILY Orchidoideae, TRIBE Orchideae, SUBTRIBE Habenariinae.
There are over 600 species of Habenaria spread throughout the temperate and tropical grasslands. The greatest concentrations of species is in tropical South America, Asia and Africa. They are decidious and die down after the flowering process leaving a fleshy tuber beneath the ground. When the plant is dormant it needs little to no water but as the new shoot appears it is time to water and keep wet till after flowering has occured. The genus is characterized by stems covered with spirally arranged leaves, root tuberoids, a terminal inflorescence giving rise to a flower with the sepals and petals free, a spurred lip, deeply lobed petals, the anther projects beyond the rostellum which is fused to the column, two spreading stigmas and two anther channels holding 2 soft sectile pollina.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the thread-like fringes on the lip

Hexisea Lindley 1834SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Laeliinae.
There are 6 species of this lithophytic and epiphytic, cool to hot genus from Central America and Northern South America that can be treated culturally like the Cattleya alliance, although they do not need a decided rest period after blooming. This genus is closely related to Scaphyglottis but differs in having red flowers, a shllow nectary and an unhinged lip that is immobile. The genus is characterized by being medium sized pendant growing epiphytes with cylindrical or fusiform stems that often develop from the apex of the previous stem. They have terminal, deciduous leaves giving rise to terminal short, racemes with a few flowers with equal sized sepals and petals that are held wide open. The lip is united with the base of the column and forms a tubular nectary and then becomes free beyond the ppoint of union forming a narrow blade. There are 4 pollina
Common Name or Meaning refers to the 6 perianths having an equal shape
