Welcome to the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia
Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.
The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the author of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the author of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.
If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `
! denotes the Type Species of the genus
* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon
I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Fernandezia Ruiz & Pavon 1798 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Oncidiinae.
A Central American and South American genus of 11 species that are all high Andean, monopodial epiphytes with distichous leaves, the bright colored flowers are produced singly in succession, with the sepals and petals free, having a saccate lip at the base, the broadly winged column clasping the callus of the lip, and the 2 pollina with caudicles that are longer than the stipe which in turn is attached to the viscidium. These plants are epiphytes found at elevations of 2500 to 3200 meters in extremely wet cloud forests. They are related to Dichaea and are quite rare.

Flickingeria A.D. Hawkes 1961 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE ?, SUBTRIBE Dendrobiinae.
There are 60 to 70 species spread throughout SE Asia and Indonesia and out to the Philippines, Australia and the Pacific Islands in this epiphytic genus that was removed from Dendrobium. The flowers are ephemeral and thin-textured with subsimilar sepals, the laterals are oblique and adnate basally to form a chin-like mentum with the column foot, the petals are narrower than the sepals and the lip is complex, 3 lobed, the hypochile is short, concave and has 2 erect, lateral lobes, the mesochile is oblong and clawed, the epichile is bi-lobed, transversly oblong to reniform, often pleated to lacerate, and has 2 to 3 raised, longitudinal lammelae that form a callus. The column is short, fleshy and has a distinct foot and carries 4 pollina in 2 appressed pairs. The plants can be grown like Dendrobium but have ephemeral flowers which last less than 1 day.

Galeandra Lindley 1832 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Catasetinae.
There are 41 species of this deciduous terrestrial or epipyhte found throughout the American tropics. They are characterized by having fusiform pseudobulbs, narrow, distichous, plicate leaves that are articulated to sheaths, a terminal racemose or paniculate inflorescence that gives rise to showy flowers with the seapls and petals free and a tubular lip with a prominent basal spur and a short foot on the column and 4 pollina. They need shady conditions and copious water while growing and then a tapering off as they bloom followed by a cool and dry winter rest with just enough misting to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling.

`Galeola Lour. 1790 SUBFAMILY Vanilloideae, TRIBE Vanillineae
There are 6 orchids in this mycoheterotrophic genus occuring from Japan to Malaysia, Indonesia to Australia, New Guinea and New Caledonia. They are leafless terrestrials that are vine-like and related to the Vanillinae. Many can be quite beautiful but are very difficult to cultivate as are most of the mycoheterotrophytes. This genus has more or less fleshy flowers with similar, concave, sometimes connivent, rarely spreading petals and sepals with a sessile, fleshy, enveloping the column, entire or lobed lip with a papilose disc or a callus, an elongate, wingless column with a thin margined clinadrium that is entire or denticulate, an incumbent anther with 2, bilobed pollina.

There are 12 species found in this genus and 6 of those are found in Colombia. As a whole they are hot to cool, humid growing plants that need basket culture to accomodate the rapid growth of the pseudobulbs and leaves. The inflorescence arises from the axils of the newly developing shoot. They have plicate leaves, a fan-shaped callus, a three-lobed lip, a fimbriate margin to the lip and four hard pollina connected to a quadrate stipe.

SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.
There are 61 some species of Gastrochilus distributed from India to eastern Asia and south to Malaysia and out to the nearby islands. It is a monopodial, short to long stemmed orchid that grows epiphytically and is similar to Aerides in appearance with coriaceous, distichous leaves giving rise to a short inflorescence with few fleshy flowers massed close together. The lip is firmly attached to the short, footless column with a globose, saccate hypochile with the sides adnate to the column wings, reduced as fleshy edges of the sac, sometimes with a short calli at the base of the sac, a small, fan-shaped, broader than long epichile attached broadly at the front edge of the sac and has 2, globular, each with a depression or dented pollina with long, strap shaped stipes and a large oblong viscidium. This genus was described by David Don in 1825 and his type species was Gastrochilus calceolaris - syn. Aerides calceolaris. This genus has been moved into and out of Aerides and Saccolabbium throughout the years but Holttum, Garay and Seidenfadden keep it separate as Gastrochilus in reviews in 1964, 72, and 88 respectively. Moderate shade and high humidity given to a wood mount or slat basket with free watering in it's growing season will result in a healthy plant. After blooming less water and fertilizer should be applied until new root growth is detected.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the bulging lip and it's affinity to a beer belly

Genyorchis Schltr. 1901 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE ? SUBTRIBE Dendrobiinae.
There are 10 species in this genus that superficially resembles Bulbophyllum plantwise and Polystachya flowerwise but is related to neither. They are small sympodial epiphytes with pseudobulbs carrying 1 or 2 leaves that blooms on a basal, laxly few to several flowered inflorescence with small, nonresupinate flowers. The petals of the flower are much smaller than the sepals or absent altogether. The lip is small and trilobed, has a short column with a long foot, two to four pollina and a single viscidium.

Geodorum G. Jacks 1811 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae, SUBTRIBE Eulophiinae
There are 8 species spread from India to SE Asia, Australia and Polynesia that are terrestrial herbs with subterranean pseudobulbs, a few plicate, petiolate leaves, and a lateral inflorescence that is dense, arching to pendulous at the apex with small, waxy, fragrant flowers with sepals and petals similar and almost joined at the base, a sessile, erect lip that is basally ventricose or saccate and is apically fused to the column foot. There are 2 dimidiate-ovoid, foveolate, sessile pollina on broad stipes and a small viscidium. They are similar in cultivation to the warm growing Calanthe.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the genus terrestrial growth habit

There are close to 133 species in this little known genus of terrestrial orchids, There was only one species in this genus for almost 100 years and then another 67 were written and added in just another 20 years, with the final 66 being added in the last 40 years. Little is known about this genus and it has seldom been cultivated.
