HOME Orchid Species Glossary

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

There are approximately 10 species in this terrestrial genus occuring in tropical Africa and the Mascarenes occuring in deep shade in forests. They have ovate, petiolate leaves with basal sheathing held by an erect stem and blooms on a terminal, racemose inflorescence with conspicuous, glandular-hairy, broad, longer than the ovary floral bracts and the flowers have free sepals and petals that are partly joined to the dorsal sepal, a lip adnate to the column for part of the length and is reflexed towards the apex, saccater at the base, and has varying shape calli. The column is elongate, the clinandrium and anther are erect and oblong, the rostellum is erect and 2 lobed and set in front of the anther and the stigma is oblong.

Platystele Schlechter 1910 SUBFAMILY Epidendrodeae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Pleurothallidinae.

This genus has 50 small species from Mexico to Bolivia with a few in Brazil in high altitude cloud forests where it is a dwarf epiphyte that grows cool to intermediate. They are characterized by caespitose, narrowly obovate, short stemmed leaves and a delicate raceme of successive or simultaneous flowers that are held shorter and longer than the leaf. The inflorescence emerges from the ramicaul with an annulus below the abscission layer. The small flowers have free translucent sepals and petals. The lip is simple and hinged to the base of the pedestal-like, column foot. The column is short and broad and has an apical anther and a bi-lobed transverse stigma carrying two pollina.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the broad shape of the column

Pleurothallis R. Brown 1813 SUBFAMILY Epidendrodeae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Pleurothallidinae.

According to Carl Luer. The largest genus within the Orchidaceae in the New World with more than 1000 species represented from all parts of subtropic and tropical Americas. Typically they are epiphytes but on occasion they can be found terrestrially or lithophtically with extremely diverse plant forms, from minature moss like plants to large ranging plants of several feet in height. Their cultural requirements are as varied as their plant form so each species should be treated according to the enviroment that it is found.

Common Name or Meaning relates to the shoots extending sideways like ribs
