HOME Orchid Species Glossary

Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.

The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the namer of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the namer of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.

If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `

! denotes the Type Species of the genus

* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon

I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Jumellea Schlechter 1914 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Angraecinae.

This genus is made up of 60 epiphytic or lithophytic or occasionally terrestrial species from the Islands of Madagascar, Comoros and Mascarene and two species from the East African mainland that are similar culturally to Angraecum. In Victorian times the leaves of Jumellea fragrans were used to brew a tea like beverage called 'Faham Tea'. Their range is from sealevel up to 2000 meters in open forests. They have short or relatively long stems with leaves either arranged along the stem or held in a fan shape. The flowers have narrow segments and a lanceolate lip that does not envelop the column. All the inflorescence carry a single, fragrant, white or green white flower.

Jumellea can be arranged into 7 groups.

Group #1 Very large plants, but with a short or no stem, and the inflorescence arising around the fan of leaves [a total of 11 species are in this group]

Group #2 Plants with a short stem and very small leaves very close together [3 species]

Group #3 Plants with a very elongate stem, and a spur at the base of the lip that is 1.5cm or less in length [10 species]

Group #4 Plants with a very elongate stem and a spur that is 1 to 1.8" [2.5 to 4.5 cm] long [3 species]

Group #5 Plants with elongate stems and a spur the is 2.6 to 3.2" [6.5 to 8 cm] long [1 species]

Group #6 Plants with an elongate stem and a spur that is 4" [10 cm] or longer [16 species]

Group #7 Plants found in Africa [2 species]

Group #8 Plants from Reunion and the Mauritius

Kefersteinia Rchb.f 1852 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae , TRIBE Maxillarieae, SUBTRIBE Zygopetaliinae

There are 36 species in this tropical American genus separated from Chondrorhyncha and characterized by a lack of pseudobulbs, foliaceous, distichous leaf sheaths forming a fan, narrow and lightly veined leaves, single flowered inflorescence that arise from the leaf sheath axils giving rise to a flower with a lip whose sides usually surround the column at the base, a pedestal like callus at the lip base, a column with a keeled underside and four compressed pollina on a short stipe attached to a hooked cordiform viscidium. This genus is mostly epiphytic, althought here are some that are found terrestrially occasionally, and grow in very wet montane forests at elevations of 300 to 2500 metrs and should be grown warm to cool with ample year round water, never allowing to dry out.

A small genus of 3 small, to medium sized plants similar to Gongora in plant appearance that is found in Central America, the Caribbean and Surinam. They are characterized by having pseudobulbs with one or two leaves at the apex, a basal, pendant racemose inflorescence, with a few to several flowers which haqve petals that are narrower than the sepals, a lip, that is continuous with the column foot, which is clawed at the base and widens up, with lateral lobes are erect and winged, the central lobe rhomboid and the disc carries a high double callus. It has an arched and winged column with 2 stiped pollina.

~ Kingidium P.F.Hunt 1970 - See Phalaenopsis Blume 1825 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Vandeae, SUBTRIBE Aeridinae.

This genus is composed of 5 species found throughout tropical Asia and are very similar to Phalenopsis in culture and in appearance. They differ from Phalenopsis by having a sacate lip and they need to stay wetter in cultivation as they cannot store much as they have no psuedobulbs. There are leafless varieties of Kingidium and these must be slab mounted as to allow the phytosynthetic roots to get sun. This genus likes intermediate light and regular year round water and fertilizer. The genus was described by Hunt in 1970 as it was formerly known as Kingiella.

Koellensteinia Rchb. f. 1854 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Maxillarieae, SUBTRIBE Zygopetalinae.

There are 16 species in this genus of smaller epiphytes and occasional terrestrials. Occuring in very wet cloud forests this genus neds to be kept moist at all times, and as they are found as a whole at elevations of 1000 to 2000 meters they need to be grown with warm to coool temperatures in pots with a well draining medium. They are characterized by the presence of tiny psedobulbs surrounded by the base s of narrow, lightly veined leaveswith a lateral multifloral inflorescence produced on a new or mature growth, giving rise to flowers with the sepals and petals free, a threee lobed lip with a bilobed, erect callus, attached to an elongate column foot, spurless, and four hard pollina in two pairs.

Laelia Lindley 1831 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Laeliinae.

Laelia was first described by John Lindley in 1831 and Schlechter revised it in 1917 by dividing the genus to 7 subsections.

1. Cattleyodes- the species that resemble Cattleya yet have 8 pollina such as Laelia purpurata.

2.Hadrolaelia- Have lips with distinctive crests and keels as well as heteroblastic psuedobulbs such as Laelia pumila.

3.Laelia- has homoblastic psuedobulbs such as Laelia speciosa.

4. Microlaelia- same as section 3 except for sepals and petals are of equal size such as Laelia lundii.

5. Cyrtolaelia- they are rupicolious or rock growing and have a narrow lip and the flower color is most often yellow to orange red such as Laelia cinnabarina.

6.Podolaelia- has sheaths and an articulated stem such as Laelia anceps.

7. Calolaelia- has a single species, Laelia superbiens, which has now been moved to Schomburgkia.

`Laeliopsis Lindl. ex Paxton 1853 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Laeliinae.

A monotypic genus found as an epiphyte or lithophyte in the Caribbean on the island of Hispaniola and Mona at altitudes from sealevel to 200 meters in xeric or hot, dry and desert like conditions. It differs from Broughtonia in that it has fleshy-rigid erose leaves and an elongate column lacking wings, and from Cattleyopsis in that it has 4 equal pollina instead of 8 unequal and the column lacks basal appendages.

Common Name or Meaning Refering to the similarities with the genus Laelia

Lanium Lindley 1881 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Laeliinae.

This genus has less than 5 species found in northern South America as small epiphytic herbs that have a creeping rhizome and for that reason are best mounted on tree fern or cork. Before flowering the plant needs shade and water, but afterwards, more light and less water is needed. These species were segregated from Epidendrum because of their scaly creeping rhizomes, small growth habit, small flowers and wooly hairs on the backs of the sepals, flower stalks and fruits. Other differences incluse, an undivided lip that is only basally attached to the coluimn. The pollina have two larger center pollina are compressed with two outer smaller 2 pollina are elongated and comma shaped. The flowers are non-resupinate and have a small bird-like appearance.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the wooley hairs on the inflorescence, flowers and fruits

Lepanthes Sw. 1799 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae , TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Pleurothallidinae.

According to Carl Luer. There are over 800 species in this miniature epiphytic or lithophytic orchids that have smaller flowers that nestled near where the stem attaches generally to a single leaf. Typically the ramicauls are emclosed by a series of tubular, ribbed, more or less imbricating sheaths with oblique, dilated, marginated ostia, and the ribs and margins of the ostia are grossly or microscopically ciliate or scabrous, occasionally glabrous. The flowers, are usually produced successively in racemes with an annulus near the apex of the ramicaul, are delicate, membranous and multicolored. The petals and lip commonly are transversly lobed. The lip is usually so specialized that it's own terminology is required. The middle lobe is commonly represented by a sculpted, microscopic appendix. The base of the lip is connate to the under surface and often near the base of the footless column. Teh anther has a pair of pollina and is dorsal or apical and the stigma is apical, subapical or ventral.

Common Name or Meaning refers to the smale scale-like flowers
