I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

There are 10 species in the genus that are widely spread through out tropical America that grows epiphytically with psuedobulbless distichous leaf fans and need a shady and humid environment at all of the elevations that they occur from sea level to 1800 meters. They are characterized by having a short column foot forming an obtuse mentum and the transverse, semicircular plate-like or gyrose callus in fron of the base of the lip distinguish this genus from others of the Chondrorhyncha alliance.

Six species are found in this genus from Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia and is distinguished by it's unifoliate pseudobulbs of a single internode subtended by distichious leaf-like sheaths. An axillary inflorescence with spurless flowers, a lip that is partially adnate to the column, a footless column, two stigmatic cavities and two hard pollian attached to a stipe and a viscidium. They require humid cool shady conditions and water sparingly when new growth is appearing, more after it matures a bit and then less through the winter months.

There are 5 species in this genus, now that it has been expanded to include the 4 members of Bothriochilus Lemaire, of terrestrial, epiphytic and lithophytic orchids that are found in Central America and the West Indies. The genus is characterized by having clustered, glossy, olive green, ovoid to ellipsoid psuedobulbs carrying to 5, apical, petiolate, linear-lanceolate, soft, ribbed, or plicate leaves and bloom on a basal, short, racemoser inflorescence with fleshy, fragrant flowers that do not open fully.

A most interesting group of 100 species that is found in all four climes, hot, warm, cool and cold and in most all of Asia east of India and on into Indonesia and Fiji. Great care must be given in knowing what climate a species comes from as they may not tolerate your conditions. Warm growing species like pandurata and speciosa require no rest while colder growing species need a dry rest in the winter. They can have close or far spaced psuedobulbs along the rhizome with 1 or 2 plicate leaves and inflorescences that arise from the apex of the psuedobulb or from the apex of a new growth. I find that wire baskets accommodate these potentially large plants best. My mature pandurata is in a 16" basket and grew out of it in 1 year!

Less thean twelve species make up this epiphytic genus of the American tropics that has short rhizomes with small psuedobulbs with one coriaceous leaf and a basal, pendant, slender, simple or branching inflorescence with several, showy small flowers with equal sized and colored sepals and petals, a large kidney shaped lip with basal projections concealed in the sepaline spur which is formed by the lateral sepals and shaped loilke a closed tube which contains nectar. They are best grown mounted on small twigs, treefern or in small pots with shady and well watered conditions and should never be dryed completely. In general the species are found on Guava trees at elevations of 800 to 1500 meters.

According to Carl Luer. Superficially resembling the widespread Pleurothallis flexuosa this monotypic genus differs in having a dark purple lip with the apex obtuse, with a pair of parallel calli, the base with a flat circular, viscid callus, and extended below into a a pair of deflexed, rigid, clavate appendages, hinged between to the under surface of the column foot by a slender, flexible strap. This lip is moveable and rocks back and forth similar to flowers in Bulbophyllum.

There are 75 species in this mainly terrestrial genus, although there are a few epiphytes, occuring in almost all tropical America with the largest concentration being in South America. There is one species Cyclopogon obliquus that has become an invasive species and is now found commonly in Hong Kong, Java, Sumatra and Sri Lanka.. They are found in primary forests in shady areas at elevations of sealevel to 3000 meters and are best grown as warm to cool growing plants and need to be kept moist. There are some species in this genus that have varigated leaf patterns and are quite distinctive. Cycnoches is a genus with 25 species spread throughout most of tropical America. This genus as a whole has long slender psuedobulbs with several internodes that have thin, veined deciduous leaves with an inflorescence that starts from the apical nodes and gives rise to unisexual flowers with both sexes sometimes on the same spike but not hermaphroditic flowers. Many more male flowers are produced than female with the main difference being that the male flowers have a longer column with a spring loaded pollina that can be ejected onto a pollinator. The 2 hard, round pollina are connected to an elongated stipe that is in turn connected to a round viscidium. They are lowland epiphytes found from sea level to 600m in humid to moist forests or terrestrials on fallen rotten logs. They like warm conditions as a whole and heavy fertilizer and water after the new lead is 2-3 " tall through it's flowering in the fall, then no water or fertilizer until the lead shows again in the spring. Many growers actually take the plant out of the pot and cut away all the roots and 2 year old bulbs and then place the naked psuedobulb in a dry lighted area until the new growth is visible. It is then potted up and the new lead is allowed to grow to 2-3" before application of water and fertilizer.

There are three species in this Madagascan genus that has many similarities to Cymbidium but in fact has closer ties to Eulophiella Rolfe. The genus has two epiphytic species, C. rhodochila and C. humblodtii, can be grown in baskets, and the terrestrial species C. flabellata, is best treated like a Phaius. Constant hot, humid, with copious water year round and great drainage of the medium. Semi shade is required to keep from sunburning the leaves.

About 44 species are found through Asia and the Pacific Islands and can be divided into three basic groups. The first group are the large flowered species that are found in the Himalayas and higher elevations of China and they require a pronounced cool period to initiate flowering. The second group grows in cool to intermediate temps year round and does not need a distinct cool snap to flower. The third and last group are the warm growing tropical plants that require yearound warm temps and because of their pendant inflorescence are best planted in hanging wire baskets.

These are the Temperate American 'Lady's Slipper' orchids that are related to the oriental Paphiopedilum, that may be growing in a forest near you. There are 50 species in the United States and Canada with a few that are found as far south as Guatemala. They are one of the most primitive of the Orchidaceae and other than, Paphiopedilum, Phragmepidilum and Selenipedium have no other common ancestors or links and as such will not procreate with other orchids outside of its Subfamily. They are almost always terrestrials but they can be found on rocks or low tree trunks if they are very mossy.

The 50 or so Cyrtochilum species were segregated from Oncidium on the basis of elongate rhizomes with well-spaced pseudobulbs, with 3 or 4 pairs of long leaves around the base, with sheaths that are longer than the pseudobulb which gives rise to an axillary, 9 to 12' [270 to 360 cm] long, branched, many flowered inflorescence with large flowers. The flowers have clawed, wavy sepals and has an erect colum that is connected to ther base of the lip. The lip carries a callus consisting of tiny tuberules lined up one in front of the other. The pollina has a broad rectangular to ovate stipe. All valid Cyrtochilum are found in the upper elevations around 1500 to 3000 meters of the Andes from Venezuela, Colombia and south to Ecuador and Peru as terrestrials in misty uplands and as such should be grown cool to cold and always kept moist.

The species of this genus are commonly called cigar orchids because of the shape of their psuedobulbs. The 32 species of the medium to large sized epiphytic, lithophytic or terrestrial plants can be found in all of tropical and subtropical America but are concentrated in Brazil. They are characterized by having fleshy pseudobulbs of several internodes carrying thin, plicate, deciduous leaves, flowering on a basal, bracteate, paniculate inflorescence that has floral bracts the same color as the flowers which have a trilobed lip that is not concave at the bottom and 2 hard pollina attached to a stipe which is attached to a round viscidium.
