Welcome to the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia
Genera or species names that are synonyms of current names are denoted with a ~.
The basiosynonym of a species is denoted with a "*". The basiosynonym is the very first name that a species had before it was changed to the current species name. If you have a name in parenthesis preceding another name, the name in parentheses is the basiosynonym. An example: ~*Ophrys bicolor Naegeli - See Ophrys apifera var. bicolor (Naegeli) Nelson: Ophyrs bicolor is the basiosynonym and in the current name the parentheses, (Naegeli), is the author of the basiosynonym, while Nelson is the author of the current species Ophyrs apifera var. bicolor.
If a genus is complete [all of the species are represented] it is preceded by a `
! denotes the Type Species of the genus
* denotes the basionym or original name with the same species taxon
I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

Macodes (Blume) Lindl. 1840 SUBFAMILY Orchidoideae, TRIBE Cranichideae SUBTRIBE Goodyerinae
There are 11 species in this terrestrial to epiphytic genus grown more for the striking coloration and striping of the leaves than for the smaller and less striking flowers occuring most often within Indonesia. Culture is similar to that given to Ludisia and Anoectochilus. This genus is closely related to Ludisia but differs in having non-resupinate flowers.

Macradenia R.Brown 1822 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Cymbidieae SUBTRIBE Oncidiinae
This genus of 11 species has small single leafed round psuedobulbs that grow epiphytically in Florida, the West Indies, Mexico and south to Colombia and Peru. This genus is characterized by having elongate pseudobulbs with a single leaf, a basal, simple or branched, usually pendant but at times erect, racemose inflorescence with medium sized flowers with equalsized sepals and petals, a lip that is totally connected to the base of the three lobed column, two broad lateral lobes nad a narrow elongate midlobe. The column has a well developed clynandrium with a prominent rostellum. The Anther is elongated and has 2 small globose pollina connected to an elongate stipe and a small viscidium. They should be mounted on tree fern or cork to accommodate the pendant growth habit and inflorescence. Moderate shade and careful watering, watching for new growth before more water and fertilizer.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the long stipites

Macroclinium Barb.&Rodr. 1882 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae , TRIBE Cymbidieae SUBTRIBE Oncidiinae
There are to date 42 species in this New World genus that is allied to Notylia. The plants occur at elevations of 400 to 1900 meters and such are all hot to cool growing epiphytes that appreciate abundant year round water. They are characterized by having a small fan-shaped plant composed of compressed leaves and sheaths from which an inflorescence arises giving rise to flowers with the sepals and petals alike and usually sagging, a lip that is long stalked, usually with a elliptic blade. The shape of he lipand how it is situated with the column is one of the distinguishing features between species in this genus. The column is elongate, terete and swollen at the apex and the anther is located on the dorsal side, with the stigma being a narrow longitudinal slit. These plants are commonly refered to as twig epiphytes and seem to be that they are not long lived in cultivation.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the large size of the kliniadrum

Three hundred species make up this world wide occuring terrestrial and occasional epiphytic genus that is concentrated the most around SE Asia but occurs on all continents save Australia. The genus is characterized by being medium sized terrestrials or epiphytes with generally psedobulbous stems surrounded by leaf sheaths and soft textured leaves. The terminal, racemose inflorescence often carries the flowers at the apex in an umbel-like situation of a few to many flowers that are small with a lip that enfolds the short, footless column which carries 4 pollina with no caudicles or stipe.
Common Name or Meaning refers to the soft leaves

Masdevallia Ruiz and Pavon 1794 SUBFAMILY Epidendroideae, TRIBE Epidendreae, SUBTRIBE Pleurothallidinae
According to Carl Luer. This genus is made up of miniature to medium sized epiphytic or lithophytic plants with creeping rhizomes, an erect short ramicaul with a single narrow coriaceous leaf, the inflorescence arises from an annulus that is a considerable distance below the abscission layer. The sepals are variously connate and commonly with tails. The petals are small with a callous margin often developed into a tooth. The lip is more or less ligulate and hinged to an incurved extension from the apex of the column foot. The column is terete with a hooded ventral anther with 2 pollina. This genus are as a whole, cool to cold growers that do best with a fine mix in pots. They like low light, high humidity and watering throughout the year but be careful not to overwater. Masdevallia is a new world genus of 600+ species and are found from Mexico to the southern Andes. The highest concentration of species is found from Venezuela to Peru through the Andes foothills and highlands.

THE SUBGENERA and SECTIONS OF Masdevallia
"Characterized by the caespitose to shortly ascending palnts that vary from mini-miniature to small in size, The leaves are petiolate. The racemes are loose or congested, nearly simultaneously flowered and borne by peduncles that are round in cross section, the floral bracts are often more or less inflated, the ovaries are carinate to crested, the sepals are caudate, and variously connate into a shallow cup or arcuate-cylindrical tube, the petals are callous on the labellar half, the margins are entire to denticulate and the shape of the apex is often spiculate but can vary within a species. The lip is more or less diivided by marginal folds into a hypochile and a smaller epichile. A delicate strap connects the base of the lip to the tip of the extension of the colum foot, or just under the tip of the extension as in the subgenus Meleagris." Luer 2003
"Characterized by the robust habit and a solitary, rather large, strong flower. The inflorescence emerges from the ramicaul a considerable distance from the base. The peduncle is round in cross section. A disinctive, large, inflated, foliaceous, floral bract encloses an abbreviated pedicel, a thickly carinate ovary and the basal portion of the flower. The seplas are rigily fleshy. The apices of the cartilaginous petals are variously thickened, channeled, twisted or verrucose. The lip is divided by marginal folds near the middle to creat an epipchile and a hypochile." Luer 2000
"Characterized by the small and densely caespitose habit with narrowly linear to narrowly obovate leaves. The peduncles are slnder, terete and sinlge flowered. The ovaries are deeply tortuous-undulate. The sepals are essentially free from each other, Although long-caudate in M picturata, the sepals are tailess in the other species in the subsection. The petals are callous on the labellar margin with the apex sharply tridentate. The lip is oblong and obtuse, with marginal folds near the middle that divide the lip into an epichile and a hypochile." Luer 2000

SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Masdevallia SUBSECTION Caudatae Veitch 1889
"Characterized by the caespitose plants with coriaceous, petiolate leaves, the elongate peduncle is slender, terete and single flowered. The ovary is smooth. The usually widely spread, more or less similar, long tailed sepasl are connate basally into a shallow, gaping, sepaline cup. The column with flanking petals and lip stand more or less erect and usually exposed conspicuously in the center of the flower. The sepals are shallowly connate or connate below the middle into a widely expanded cup with an exposed lip and column flanked by the petals. The petals are cartilaginous and carinate along the labellar margin, usually with a well developed, retrorse, tooth-like process at the base. The lip is thin, flat and more or less oblong, with the disc smooth or with a low pair of longitudinal calli. There is sometimes minimal thickening toward the base. The apex is usually broadly obtuse without a proximal constriction. However, the lip is often more or less narrowed below the apex. The lip is not sigmoid when viewed from the side as is often seen in the subsection Oscilantes. A callus is usually present at the apex in both subsections. The base is delicately hinged on the end to a free extension of the end of the column foot. In those species with the column, lip and petals in a more or less horizontal position, the lip may be passively motile as in subsection Oscilantes so a species should be sought in either subsection." Luer 2000
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Masdevallia SUBSECTION Coccineae Veitch 1889
"Characterized by the single, brightly colored flowers with a comparitively narrow, sepaline tube, beyond which the lateral sepals are variously connate into a widely expanded lamina that is longer than the tube. The petals, lip and column are located deeply within the tube, The petals are callous along the labellar margin with a simple basal process. The lip is oblong and simple. Unusual deviations include M deformis with a spiculate margin of the lip and M rosea subsp echinata with a spiculate apex of the lip." Luer 2000
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Masdevallia SUBSECTION Masdevallia
"Characterized by a variety of combinations of features, all eight sections share the following characters. A single flower which, in many species is followed by a second, smooth ovaries that are more or lessshallowly sulcate between the carpels: and sepals connate for varying distances form above the base to near the apex to form a sepaline cup or tube of varoius shapes. The callus on the labellar half of the petals is extremely variable, even sometimes absent. The lip is simple, commonly with a longitudinal pair of low calli, and the base is hinged to an extension from the tip of the column foot." Luer 2000
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Masdevallia SUBSECTION Oscillantes Luer 1986
"Characterized by the lip with wing-like , lateal margins often modified into lobes and a base that is delicately hinged or balanced by a thin, flat, strap-like extension from the column foot. The slightest breeze will cause the lip to oscillate. In some species of the subsection Caudatae and Alatacaules eg. Masdevallia pinocchio the lip may also oscillate. In some speceies the lip is intermediate between Oscillantes and Caudatae so both subsections should be examined. " Luer 2000
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Masdevallia SUBSECTION Saltatrices [Rchb.f] Luer 1986
"Characterized by the single flowered inflorescence with sepals deeply connate into a cylindrical tube that is much longer than the obtuse to abruptly caudate, free portions that often are more or less similar to each other. The tube is usually ventricose below or near the middle and constricted to some degree near or above the middle. The petals and lip are deep within the tube and out f sight. The petals are callous along the labellar margin with oe without a well developed proces at or above the base. The lip is simple with the disc either featureless or with a pair of low longitudinal calli. The lip is distinctly bicallous in M x ligiae a presuned natural hybrid, sugesting a species of SECTION Polyanthe as one of the parents. It is included here in this section because of the ventricose and constricted sepaline tube." Luer 2000
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Minutae Rchb.f Ex Woolw. 1896
"Characterized by a caespitose habit terete peduncels with usuaully more than a single flower successively, although 2 species produce 2 simultaneous flowers. The petals have aprotrusion from a callus between the middle and lower thirds obove or along the labellar margin. The lip is more or less oblong with a longitudinal pair of more or less converging calli on or above the middle third of the disc." Luer 2000
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Racemosae Woolward 1896
A monotypic subsection characterized by the long-repent habit, a loose inflorescence of often simultaeouysly 2, successively flowered inflorescence, with the flowers with deeply connate sepals without tails, elliptical, acute petals, and a simple, oblong lip.
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Reichenbachianae Woolw. 1896
Characterized by successive or single flowered inflorescence, sepals are slender tailed and not usually as fleshy as SECTION Coriaceae and the spaline tubes is often more or less laterally compressed, the petals are thick and callous along the labellar margin without forming a distinct process. The lip is not as thick and verrucose as in SECTION Coriaceae, and is also more or less oblong and shallowly sulcate centrally between a longitudinal pair of low calli that do not form marginal folds, but occasionally the calli converge.
SUBGENUS Masdevallia SECTION Triotosiphon ( Schltr. ) H.R.Sweet 1978
"Characterized by the small to very small, caespitose plants braring single, more or less tubular, humpbacked flowers constricted above the middle. The free portions of the sepals are short, thick and similar to each other. Although calliferous petals are one of the primary distinctions of Masdevallia, some species petals in this section are vestigal to wholly lacking. The lips are simple and oblong and channeled between longitudinal callii." Luer 2003
"Characterized by the relatively thin, coriaceous leaves with the petiole distinctly conduplicate. The slender peduncle is round in cross section, and commonly ascende the groove. A few, successive flowers are bournein a lax raceme. The dorsal sepal is essentially free from the lateral sepals, similar to that of M picturata. The lateral sepals are connate to each other at the base where the blades are deflexed from a shallow cup beneatht the free tip of the column foot. The petals are variously callous along the labellar margin. The lip is delicately hinged beneath by a thin strap to the extension of the column foot." Luer 2000
"Characterized by the small, caespitose habit with narrow, obovate leaves, the single flowered peduncle, more or less iflated floral bracts, carinate crested ovaries, sepals connate into a tube with an inflated base created by a long, curved column foot and the lip divided by marginal folds into a hypochile and an epichile, which stands more or less erect within the flower."
